The Big Picture

Good morning, traders. The S&P 500 Index (SPY) surprised a lot of people yesterday by smashing through every significant line of resistance. The question many are asking now is will the move continue today? From a trader's perspective however, two more important questions he or she should have answered before the opening bell are "what will I do if the market goes higher today and what will I do if the market goes lower today?" Let's look at the chart below and review our plans for both events.

The resistance lines we have been referencing for the past two weeks on the SPY chart are now lines of support which will continue to be important price levels in the near term.

Given yesterday's price action, we are inclined to think that the market will continue higher today with the next level resistance coming into play around the 110.54 on the SPY. If the market opens strong this morning, our plan is to enter one or two of our best long set ups early. Once the SPY gets near the 110.54 level we would either tighten stops and/or reduce our exposure by trimming some or all of our position(s). If we are unable make an entry at acceptable price levels on the long side, we will simply wait for price to touch the 110.54 level. Depending on the strength of the market at that point, we might look to make a counter trend play for a point lower.

Our back up plan in case the market disappoints and does not follow through of yesterday's move higher is to do nothing and let other market participants hash it out. With the lines of support now beneath price, there is too much working against a move lower. In this case, a move lower could lead us to a more favorable long entry level so keeping our powder dry seems like the best move. We did list two shorts in today's Bulls and Bears section for more aggressive traders to consider, however it is not an endorsement to get short here.

Whether the market moves up or down today, our recommendation is to keep position size smaller until the SPY trades above the 110.54 or back below 108.12.

Under The Hood

When we say "under the hood" we mean market internals, ie: what was really happening behind the scenes. ShadowTraders who listen to our daily broadcast every day live on the thinkorswim platform know that all closing figures on the major averages should only be interpreted in the context of market internals. Look for convergences and divergences in the breadth, a/d line, and trin figures below to either confirm or cast doubt on what all those talking heads on TV are telling you.
